20 Years of Democracy

Lindeka Qampi (b. 1969)

Born the Eastern Cape, Lindeka Qampi is a mother of four children; she now lives and works in Khayelitsha in Cape Town. Qampi began taking photographs in 2006, when she met members of the Iliso Labantu a community-based photo collective. She began her career as a street photographer photographing weddings, events, and portraits but moved on to exploring her community in different ways including a project on street culture shown here. A recent film, Life Framed, has been made about Lindeka Qampi.

"My first documentary series was totally unplanned. I was in the streets of Khayelitsha and recognized the sounds associated with a traditional initiation ceremony. I introduced myself to the group and asked permission to photograph. The results really impressed and encouraged me to continue with photography and make it my career. I have never looked back. "
